Saturday, December 21, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Aux Feuilles Volantes bookstore in Saint-Paul-lès-Dax, the Zero Waste Pays Dacquois association will hold a gift wrapping stand using the furoshiki technique. Explanations with Camille Trautmann, one of the creators of the association.
What is the furoshiki technique?
No more paper, adhesive, glue or ribbons needed. Furoshiki is a Japanese technique that allows gifts to be wrapped with reusable fabrics. This can be old clothes, old sheets, old curtains, which we will cut up. Then, we will wrap the gift using folds – a bit like origami – closed most of the time with a knot. The technique is accessible to everyone and the result is often very elegant.
What are the objectives of your association?
Our main objective is to raise awareness of the zero waste approach. For example, it is showing alternatives to the sponge that we throw away, showing that we can replace plastic packaging with glass jars, showing what lactofermentation is and how we can preserve vegetables in a brine. It involves a lot of demonstrations and workshops.
But still?
We also have an advocacy part. We go to meet elected officials, institutions and companies that request it, to support them in implementing waste reduction actions.
And then we need to animate our network of volunteers, because the zero waste approach is very demanding. We try to help each other grow through sharing. Everyone has their specialty and explains their little recipes to others.
