Puertos del Estado, the Spanish state body in charge of port management, admitted that Moroccan ports like Nador or Tangier are “very powerful rivals” of their Iberian equivalents, basically in the “lift-on and lift-off” container segment, “with a very transoceanic vision”.

“Today, Tanger Med transships nearly nine million containers equivalent to twenty feet of TEU per year, while the main Spanish port, which is Algeciras, with Valencia, moves around five million TEU,” the president of the organization, Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena, told the media during a visit to Melilla.

Rodríguez Dapena interpreted that with these data, “Morocco is positioning itself” in this sector with a “competitive advantage in terms of price”, and highlighted that Spain, being a member of the European Union (EU), has a competitive advantage in the rest of the components of the service. In terms of port connectivity, this year, the port of Algeciras is ahead of Tanger Med for the first time since 2022.

On the other hand, he stressed that Morocco generates a “additional traffic” compared to the ports of the peninsula.

“What we see is that alongside a rebalancing in the distribution of the flow of these containers, there is an interannual increase of around 6% to 7% over around ten or fifteen years in road traffic both in trucks than in semi-trailers, which benefits us both”, he added.
