At the end of the season, the two best championships according to the UEFA coefficient will be granted an additional place for the next edition of the Champions League.

By winning against Sporting CP on Tuesday evening, Club Brugge brought 0.400 additional points to Belgium’s UEFA coefficient. But above all, the Blauw & Zwart have almost secured themselves a high qualification bonus, which could bring more than victories.

Indeed, Club Bruges, individually, has already obtained 6,000 points by qualifying for the league phase, to which must be added +0.250 per position gained from the top 24 (+0.250 for the 24th, +0.500 for the 23rd, +0.750 for the 22nd,…). These bonus points will have to be divided by 5 (since there are five clubs represented in Europe) to know what exactly they will bring to the Belgian coefficient. In the event of reaching the 1/8 finals, then for each round passed, another bonus of 1,500 points, which must also be divided by 5, will be granted. In its position of 14th, Bruges would obtain 2,750 bonus points.

In the Europa League, the calculation is the same, with +0.250, except that the teams did not receive any qualification “bonus”. It will therefore be +0.250 for 24th, +0.500 for 23rd, etc. In the Conference League, where there was no qualification bonus either, +0.125 must be added between each team, from the top 24 to the top 9, then +0.250 from 8th to 1st. The bonuses for accession to the 1/8 finals, then given at each past round, are set at 1,000 for the Europa League, and 0,500 for the Conference League (bonuses always to be divided by 5, for Belgium, to obtain the coefficient per country).

While waiting for the teams entered in these two competitions, Belgium has therefore consolidated its seventh place in the annual ranking and its eighth place in the overall ranking, by moving a little closer to its closest pursuer, Portugal.

At the end of the season, the two best championships according to the UEFA coefficient will be granted an additional place for the next edition of the Champions League. A very difficult objective to achieve, but not so hypothetical for Belgium. In fact, our country is now “only” 1,475 points behind… Portugal (definitely, how important this Bruges victory was!), ranked second. As you will have understood, having five qualified representatives for, at a minimum, the play-offs will be essential.
