Archaeologists are used to unpleasant surprises: looting of sites, theft of material or deterioration of remains. At the end of last week, the Archeodunum company was able to add the attack on one of its construction machines to the list.
This is a mechanical excavator, used for the structural work of the excavation which is taking place on the Mormont with a view to extending the quarry of the cement manufacturer Holcim. An excavation mandated by Vaud cantonal archeology and which must end in a few days, before a new campaign next year.
Complaint filed
The machine was “completely set on fire”, deplore the archaeologists, who do not doubt for a moment that it was a voluntary action, targeting either the excavation site, although secure, or the multinational company. The excavators point out that they carry out their profession without taking a position on the debate surrounding the hill and the concrete industry. A complaint was filed and an investigation was opened.
The site made famous by the first ZAD (zone to be defended) in Switzerland has been confirmed to the cement manufacturer by the Federal Court. Preventive excavations have since uncovered an impressive wall, probably Gallic and linked to the neighboring deposit pits.
For its part, the cement manufacturer has not noted any depredation to date.
