At 52, the Frenchman beat his own record on Sunday in Namibia to reach 99.06 km/h.
Always faster. On Sunday, December 1, Antoine Albeau broke a new windsurfing world speed record during the “Lüderitz Speed Challenge” in Namibia, the annual event dedicated to speed. Already the holder of the previous record dating from 2015, the native of La Rochelle benefited from favorable conditions to reach 53.49 knots, or 99.06 km/h.
“I beat my own record! It's the 4th since 2008, it's great and it's still so proudrejoiced Antoine Albeau. At these speeds, every detail is important: you need good weather conditions, obviously, but also good equipment, good physical condition and a beautiful canal… I spent time working on the canal in recent weeks.”
At 52, age doesn't matter so much for Antoine Albeau. Retired since 2022, after 25 world champion titles, the windsurfer continues to impress. “Despite being 50 years old, I am in good physical shape. It's been a year and a half since I got back into it, I feel really good. At these speeds, it can quickly become dangerous, because the canal is very shallow (25 to 35 cm of water in certain areas), falls must be avoided. But this year there was none.”
The Frenchman does not intend to stop there. He is also embarked on another world record attempt with the “Project Zephyr” for several years. The objective this time is to beat the absolute world speed record for sailing, set at 65.45 knots (121 km/h).
