“Dear young people, for peace, we must stop this violence.” It is with these words, pronounced partly in the Corsican language, that Cardinal François-Xavier Bustillo addressed the Corsican high school students mobilized, this Monday, December 2, against the ban on the use of Corsican at the regional assembly by the administrative court of appeal of Marseille.
Throughout the day, clashes between high school students and the police took place in front of the prefecture in Ajaccio. “There is tension, violence. I believe it is important to stop and we must resolve the problem through dialogue“, Cardinal Bustillo insists.
These clashes take place 13 days before the expected arrival of Pope Francis in the imperial city. An event that François-Xavier Bustillo did not fail to recall. “The Pope visits us, let us prepare peace, live peace. For a united Corsica, for peace, please”, he declares.
This Monday, 12 high schools and colleges were blocked by their students. A blockage which occurs the day after a demonstration, organized by student unions, which brought together between 300 and 400 people in Corte.
