It was on the night of November 27 to 28, 2024. Six of the Food Bank's refrigerated trucks of Gard were set on fireendangering its missions to the most deprived. A fire apparently of a criminal nature.
“The Gard food bank fights against food insecurity, we help 93 associations which allow feed 42,000 people in the Gard”, explains the Bank, which describes its daily life as follows: “Every morning drivers leave for collection, they will collect fresh products and products close to the use-by date from our partner stores. These foodstuffs arrive at the food bank and are sorted by a team of volunteers to then be redistributed immediately to the 20 daily associations for 12,000 meals per day. »
The damage is estimated at 500 000 euros by the Food Bank and it seemed insurmountable. Except that very quickly, there was a surge of solidarity.
A company, a collection, a raffle, communities…
An online prize pool has been set up on HelloAsso to buy the six trucks. Although it is unlikely that the Bank will raise 500,000 euros in this way (more than 7,000 euros were collected on Monday December 2), other gestures have been made. Like that of thePierre Sollier companyin Nîmes, who offered a truck.
And there is also a group of fourteen Gard intercommunities, which announced to bring together 100,000 euros in direct aid. “At the edge of winter, in a degraded social climate, in a department which is the 5e the poorest in France, the Food Bank must be able to continue its work,” believe these communities (including Nîmes Métropole, Alès Agglomération, the Rhone Gard Agglomeration and Beaucaire Terre d’Argence), in a press release.
A fire denounced from all sides
Other communities have also made donations, such as the Beaucaire town hall. As well as Crédit Mutuel Méditerranéen and Caisse Fédérale de Crédit Mutuel.

L'Usam the Nîmes handball clubwill also organize a raffle at Parnasse, during the next match against MHB (Montpellier Handball).
In the meantime, the Food Bank is replacing the missing trucks with those loaned by other food banks. But the collection of course remains online to try to resolve this situation created by a fire which has been denounced from all sides.
