This Monday, December 2, around 200 Ajaccian high school students went to demonstrate loudly in front of the gates of the prefecture. Their objective: to defend the Corsican language. To prevent tension from rising, the CRS used tear gas to disperse them.
Since the beginning of the morning, it has been impossible to enter certain middle schools or high schools on the island. This is particularly the case in Sartène, Ajaccio, Bastia or Borgo. “We block mainly for classes and students. All classes are canceled and no students are returning. Afterwards those who work on the farm come in every day because they have to run it”, explains Matteu Fracisci, spokesperson for the high school students at the Borgo agricultural high school.

“Let it become a Corsican youth movement”
The confirmation of the administrative court of appeal of Marseille to prohibit the use of the Corsican language during debates at the regional assembly, still does not go down with young people.
“I was able to participate in the delegation that was created on Friday. We were not in favor, in the name of the delegation, of creating a blockade today, explains Stella Pedinielli, spokesperson for the high school students at the Laetitia high school in Ajaccio. However, the student unions called us to demonstrate today, because they also planned to block the university. So we want to support the students so that it is no longer just a movement of high school students, but a movement of Corsican youth in general.”
Support which is also starting to be organized outside the big cities. Thus, the movement has notably spread to establishments in Balagne since Monday.
On Sunday, the demonstration organized in Corte brought together between 300 and 400 people. A disappointment for the student unions who have today decided to rely on high school students to mobilize on the question of language beyond nationalist youth.
New demonstrations could be organized tomorrow in Bastia and Balagne.
