The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture confirmed the information to France 3 Côte d'Azur this Monday morning, nine people escaped from the administrative detention center, CRA, in Nice on Sunday and only one was found and arrested.

As for the modus operandi, there is little doubt, according to Laurent Alcaraz, the departmental delegate of Alliance in the Alpes-Maritimes, “the detainees, according to my information, damaged a false ceiling and then removed tiles before escaping.” They obviously helped themselves with a rope according to our information.

An investigation has been opened, said the Nice Public Prosecutor's Office on Monday.

For information, the CRAs aim to detain, through a measure of deprivation of liberty, foreign people forced to leave French territory.

In Nice, the center has 40 places, it is located within the Auvare police barracks, in the north-east of the city.

In addition to general measures in and around the barracks, 70 border police officers take turns to ensure surveillance and security within the CRA building.

According to a police source, its population has changed significantly in recent years and a large proportion of the people placed there with a view to being deported to the border are there upon their release from prison.

In 2018, another escape took place from the same center, five undocumented immigrants managed to deceive the guards' vigilance using a rope.

For Laurent Alcaraz, “the premises are not suitable, among the population of this CRA we are not dealing with simple people in irregular situations, but criminal profiles, thugs!, that's the difficulty of having degraded premises.”
