Fatal fire in Souillac: Vinessen and Suchita, inseparable until death

Vinessen Sanmoogum Maduray, 36, and Suchita Jankee, 38, were inseparable. For some time, the couple had been living in an abandoned house in Souillac and suffered a tragic fate. On Thursday afternoon, a fire broke out in the abandoned house they lived in. Trapped in this makeshift home, they died of asphyxiation before being burned.

Previously, Vinessen resided at Résidences Gris-Gris while his partner lived in Chemin-Grenier. The couple had been living together for about eight months. “They lived in Chemin-Grenier,” explains Vishnu, Vinessen’s father. His son earned his living as a plumber, but he also did odd jobs when he had no other commitments. “He did a little bit of everything,” adds the latter.

After a while, the couple left their place of residence in Chemin-Grenier to settle in rue Autard, in Souillac. “My son and his partner came to live not far from here in an abandoned house. Mo ti dir li vinn ress kot mwa,” explains Vishnu. But his son didn’t want to. He last saw Vinessen last Sunday. “He was at the house for a while. He was in good health,” he said.

He didn’t expect a tragedy to happen a few days later. “Tou le de bwar dan sa lakaz la,” he adds painfully. Around 4:35 p.m. on Thursday, November 28, Souillac police received a call regarding a violent fire in a house. Thick smoke emanated from the abandoned house. The Saint-Aubin firefighters were also called in to contain the fire. Once the fire was under control, they noticed that there were two people in the house. Suchita Jankee was lying on a mattress placed on the floor while her companion was on the ground. They discovered bottles of alcohol everywhere at the scene of the disaster. The couple died in this fire. The bodies were taken to the Souillac hospital morgue. An autopsy attributed the deaths of both people to asphyxiation caused by smoke.

The tragic disappearance of the couple distresses those close to them. Vinessen’s father explains with difficulty that he had three children, two sons and a daughter. “I have already lost one young son, now it’s another’s turn. I only have my daughter left. On November 5, 2023, my wife died,” he says with tears in his eyes.
