On TikTok and Instagram, a driver who comes from the Liège region publishes videos where he drives at too high speeds among other traffic violations.
These videos, viewed by our colleagues at Sudinfo, show for example the individual driving at more than 100 km/h on the Roosevelt quay, in Liège, where the speed is however limited to 50 km/h. It also goes at 231 km/h on the E40 in Waremme or at 140 km/h on Boulevard Albert 1er in Herstal, where it is not allowed to drive at more than 70 km/h.
Some useful reminders
Driving at such speeds obviously carries risks. Note, for example, that at 230 km/h, the reaction distance, i.e. the distance traveled even before the driver presses the brake, is 64 meters counting a reaction time of one second.
Add to this the 265 meters needed to stop if the ground is dry and we get a stopping distance of 329 meters, the current height of the Eiffel Tower.
In Belgium, “Motorists are recommended to leave, between their vehicle and the one in front, a distance equivalent to that covered in 2 seconds“, i.e. a safety distance of approximately 67 meters at 120 km/h. In France, this period of time is even written into the law.
