Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye gave an interview to the foreign press this Thursday, as a prelude to the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Thiaroye massacre, commonly known as Thiaroye 44. In his statements, the head of state directly addressed the question of the presence of French soldiers on Senegalese soil.
“Senegal is an independent country, it is a sovereign country, and sovereignty does not accommodate the presence of foreign military bases on its territory,” he said.
He continued: “Sixty-four years after independence, the French authorities must consider a partnership devoid of this military presence, but a rich, fruitful, privileged and global partnership, as we have with many other countries. The presence or absence of military bases should not be synonymous with a rupture. »
To support his remarks, President Diomaye cited the examples of relations between Senegal and countries such as China, Turkey, the United States and Saudi Arabia. “All these countries do not have a military base in Senegal,” he stressed.
