On July 8, 1982, the French Football team led by Michel Platini played in the semi-final of the Football World Cup. In Seville, France dreams of a first final but they must defeat Germany. At the end of extra time and a legendary match, forever engraved in the memories of French supporters, the Blues finally lost after extra time by failing the penalty test. A defeat marked by the aggression of German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher.
When Patrick Battiston comes into play in the 50th minute, to replace the injured Genghini, he does not imagine for a single moment the scenario that awaits him. Seven minutes later, the ex-Nancéian Platini offers a ball to the ex-Messin, everyone believes in the goal. Battiston presents himself alone against Harald Schumacher who comes out at full speed. Without taking care of the ball which ends up next to the goal, he violently hits Battiston's head with his hip, who collapses to the ground. Unconscious on the lawn, he lost three teeth in the shock before being evacuated on a stretcher. He remains in a coma for several minutes before coming back to his senses. A gesture that Battiston would forgive a week later in Metz.
That evening, Patrick Battiston wore number 3 on his jersey. On the occasion of a Telethon 2024 operation, he decided to offer it to Marly Grands Cœurs, a non-profit charitable association in Moselle. This is precisely the second copy of the official game. The jersey that he wore during the match went to the Spanish doctors who took care of it immediately.
Patrick Battiston officially confirmed the authenticity of the jersey in a video (where he is accompanied by Marius Trésor). “It is likely that Patrick Battiston will come to Metz to present his jersey to the winner” announces the association. Subscription is open until November 30, 2024.
