Workplace harassment and homophobic graffiti: a Canada Post letter carrier breaks the silence

A Canada Post employee decided to report the constant harassment he allegedly experiences in his workplace.

Under the cover of anonymity, the postal worker told Noovo Info that countless homophobic graffiti against him had appeared in the branch on Bridge Street in Montreal, particularly in the toilets.

“I don’t go to the bathroom anymore,” he lamented.

While it all started in April 2023, the threats allegedly took on disproportionate proportions when an insulting letter was sent to his home and graffiti was found on his work desk and on his mail truck.

“On the letter it said: ‘shut up, faggot,'” he says.

His ordeal led him to burnout in October 2023.

“My doctor who put me on sick leave and on the CNESST for criminal harassment at work with psychological monitoring.”

And more than a year later, the person behind this heinous act has still not been identified, although an investigation has been opened by Canada Post and the authorities.

In an email, Canada Post said it has a “zero tolerance policy on inappropriate behaviour and discrimination in the workplace.”

In the eyes of the president of the Montreal Postal Workers Union, Renaud Viel, it is abnormal that the situation has not been resolved a year later.

“We are taking the situation seriously and have acted quickly,” it read.

When the employee returned to work, the situation resumed with renewed vigor, with no functioning security cameras able to spot the person responsible.

“I find it inconceivable,” protested Tiffany Dubreuil, a colleague of the alleged victim. “Put a camera in the bathroom, bring a security guard into the place.”

“What’s next? Going after someone with intellectual disabilities? Someone who’s deaf? Someone who’s obese?”

Mr. Viel also had a message for the person who allegedly drew the graffiti.

“Stop this harassment, it makes no sense in 2024. We are attacking human rights and a person.”

For his part, the postman simply wants “the situation to stop” so that he can “move on”.
