POLITICS – Pressure on Dominique Faure. The Minister Delegate for Local Authorities, elected in the 10th constituency of Haute-Garonne since 2022, announced this Tuesday, July 2, that she was withdrawing her candidacy for the legislative elections. She came in third place on Sunday, behind the candidate of the New Popular Front Jacques Oberti (36.2%) and that of the RN Caroline Falgas-Colomina (30.3%).

“Maintaining my candidacy was for me the best solution to beat the extremists. The fight against the RN has always been my compass”she wrote in a text message revealed by some journalists. Above all, Dominique Faure reveals in this message that it was the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister in person who asked her to withdraw.

“With complete confidence in their approaches to find solutions for the benefit of our country, I am doing so today with responsibility”she continues. The NFP candidate in favour of whom she is withdrawing is a locally well-established socialist, president of the Sicoval urban community, near Toulouse.

In the context of the second round of the legislative elections, Gabriel Attal called on the candidates of the presidential camp, qualified in three-way races in third place, to withdraw in order to block the extreme right.

Olivier Faure was increasing the pressure

The minister’s withdrawal was not, however, a given, given her recent positions. “I have 22,800 voters who voted for it and I can’t see how I could give them the only choice of voting RN or LFI.”she explained at the beginning of the week, considering that her socialist rival “is linked by an alliance with LFI”.

But the pressure was becoming too great. The First Secretary of the PS Olivier Faure had asked him to withdraw: “Faced with the threat of full powers for the RN, a minister chooses to stay even though she came third. Shameful.”

Another very strong reaction, that of the president of the PS group in the Senate, Patrick Kanner: “When the RN is on the verge of power, we put our pride aside and fight so that the democratic forces prevail. Stand down, otherwise you will suffer dishonor and defeat.”
