The Bastia Criminal Court delivered its verdict on Tuesday, July 2, regarding the case of electoral fraud during the 2020 municipal elections. Don Petru Luccioni and Laura Orsini-Sauli were found guilty of “fraudulent maneuvers having undermined the sincerity of the vote”. A fine of 3,000 euros, of which 1,500 was suspended, as well as one year of ineligibility were imposed on the two defendants. They were also convicted of forgery and use of forgery. The third defendant, Marc’Andria Luccioni, cousin of Don Petru Luccioni, received a suspended fine of 1,500 euros and a one-year ineligibility for the same reasons.

A sentence lower than the requirements

The public prosecutor had requested a 6-month suspended prison sentence, 5 years of ineligibility and 5,000 euros in fines against Don Petru Luccioni and Laura Orsini-Sauli, two assistant mayors of Bastia prosecuted for “false proxies” following an appeal filed by the opposition list Unione per Bastia. According to investigators, of the 682 powers of attorney established from a medical certificate, several came from Dr. Orsini-Sauli based on information given by Don Petru Luccioni, a pharmacist. For the Bastia prosecutor’s office, these links between the two doctors, candidates at the time on Pierre Savelli’s list, demonstrated “a real conflict of interest with the intention of influencing the outcome of an election”.

The three defendants have 10 days to appeal.
