On BFMTV, the outgoing MP for the 5th constituency of Seine-Saint-Denis, who is on bad terms with La France Insoumise, announced that she would not be standing in the second round of the legislative elections on Sunday, July 7.

“I am withdrawing.” Raquel Garrido is dropping out of the race. The outgoing MP for the fifth constituency of Seine-Saint-Denis, who is running for re-election, announced on BFMTV on Monday, July 1, that she would not be standing in the second round this Sunday. In the first round, she came in third place (23.65%) behind the UDI’s Aude Lagarde (24.56%) and the rebel Aly Diouara (33.10%).

“I don’t have a principle with variable geometry,” justifies the former lawyer. “The Sixth Republic is also an ethic in politics.”

A “position of principle”

Earlier this Monday, Alexis Corbière and Danielle Simonnet asked the LFI candidates nominated in their place to withdraw in their favor, Raquel Garrido declaring herself ready in exchange to withdraw her candidacy in favor of the movement’s “official” candidate.

“My position of principle, which is to withdraw, I cannot carry it alone, it would be too unfair. We must withdraw together,” she declared to Sabrina Ali Benali (7th constituency of Seine-Saint-Denis) and Céline Verzeletti (15th of Paris).

“I wanted us to do it together, it seemed to me that it was the right thing to do. I see that the frenzy, of a kind of vengeance, of hatred within La France Insoumise by the leadership continues,” laments Raquel Garrido on BFMTV. “I can do no better than to be responsible for my own actions.”

Facing Danielle Simonnet, Céline Verzeletti announced that she would remain in the race. “There is no risk for this constituency in Paris: it will not swing to the right or the far right,” she said.

As for Sabrina Ali-Benali, she published a post on her social networks this Monday evening indicating that she will continue to campaign. In the first round she had collected 36.39%, behind Alexis Corbière and his 40.19%.
