In a tight match, the Blues overcame Belgium on Monday, July 1, 2024, in the round of 16 of Euro 2024. Victory 1-0 in the very last minutes.

Didier Deschamps’ players were able to count on a deflected shot from Randal Kolo Muani to break the Belgian lock in the 84th minute. Another own goal, like against Austria in the group stage. An own goal that made the Blues happy.

A tense first half

Because the first 45 minutes of the match were very tense. After 25 minutes of play, the French had already collected three yellow cards.

Kylian Mbappé and his teammates had possession, but only managed to get one of their nine shots on target. A sterile possession, then, while Belgium managed to look threatening on a free kick from Kevin De Bruyne (24th) deflected by Mike Maignan, or Yannick Carrasco whose half-volley was deflected by Théo Hernandez.

Both teams went into halftime with the score blank. And we were a bit bored watching the game.

The Enterprising Red Devils

The French team had many chances, but the most obvious came from Aurélien Tchouaméni at the start of the second half.

The Red Devils could have opened the scoring in the 60th minute without a magnificent defensive comeback from Théo Hernandez, in the box, on Yannick Carrasco or again in the 70th minute when Romelu Lukaku unleashed a heavy shot stopped by Mike Maignan.

France can also thank the goalkeeper: in the 82nd minute, he won his one-on-one against Kevin de Bruyne again. Saving the Blues in the process. The Blues transcended by this save?

In any case, two minutes later, Randal Kolo Muani deceived the Belgian goalkeeper, Koen Casteels, with a shot deflected by Jan Verthongen (who was awarded the goal) and sent France to the quarter-finals.
