the essential
A year after her death, a rugby tournament was organized in Valence d’Agen (Tarn-et-Garonne) in memory of Ombeline Carrié, bringing together family and friends in a festive atmosphere.

Almost a year ago, on July 29, 2023, during a terrible traffic accident near Valence (Tarn-et-Garonne), Ombeline Carrié, a 22-year-old girl, lost her life.

This disappearance had plunged her family, and all those who knew her closely or from afar, and there were many, into deep sorrow. Starting with the women’s rugby team Les Suricates, which had become her second family. It was essential to preserve her memory in hearts.

A long preparation

Her relatives therefore decided to organize a sevens rugby tournament, to touch, which would take place over one day and which would bring together young girls, who already play rugby, but also those who have never touched a ball. Regardless, the main thing would be to gather around family, to remember and have fun.

A big organization to put in place, it required almost a year of preparation, but Jérôme, the dad; Laurence, the mother; Megane, the big sister; Thomas Hebert, Ombeline’s cousin, dismissed in Biarritz, and all their friends quickly joined forces.

The “Paillettes” team won the tournament

Eleven teams were registered, with one goal: to have fun, no serious outfits, disguises and assumed names, just that: “Les Brochettes”, “Les Jager Bombes”, “Les Strass”, “Les Demi-pêches”, “Les Barrettes”, “Les Soignantes dantées”, “Les Boumboum girls”, “Les Lionnes”, “Les Paillettes”, “Les Indestructibles”, “Les Blouses blanche”.
Throughout the day, the teams met in a relaxed atmosphere but the competition was relegated to the background. But a tournament requires a winner, it was “Les Paillettes” who won, followed by “Brochettes” and “Barrettes”.

Former members of the Valencian Future

During this day in tribute to Ombeline, Mayor Jean-Michel Baylet was present with the family, accompanied by Michel Weill, president of the departmental council.

The two elected officials spent the entire afternoon and participated in the distribution of prizes, as did several former Avenir Valencian players: David Tastet, Julien Lacombe, Mike Russell, Nasser Ben Amor, Olivier Guizot, Sylvain Decon. A raffle allowed people to win jerseys offered by Stade Toulouse, Patrice Dulin, the French women’s team, Bègles Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Biarritz and SU Agen.
A great day to remember and as Jérôme Carrié reminded us, this tournament will be repeated every year.
