The benefits of olive oil for our health (rich in antioxidants, monounsaturated fatty acids, etc.) are no longer in doubt. If the overwhelming majority of products sold in France pose no problem, some should absolutely be avoided. The last time the precious liquid was talked about, in a bad way, was in May 2023. The magazine 60 Millions de consommateurs had scrutinized 24 extra virgin olive oils marketed in France, the study had established the presence of contaminants potentially harmful to health, plasticizers, up to 3 per brand. A new affair breaks out…
Health authorities point to the Egetad brand, according to information reported by the Rappel Conso site. Sold throughout France under lot 51271125 with a minimum durability date of November 27, 2025, this olive oil should not be consumed. The reason: the presence of mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) at levels exceeding the regulatory limit. Consumers are advised to get rid of them so as not to expose themselves to risks.
Note that aromatic hydrocarbons in mineral oils are petroleum derivatives and are suspected of being carcinogenic substances and endocrine disruptors. They present the same harmfulness as hydrocarbons saturated with mineral oils (MOSH). Furthermore, they are detected in the inks or adhesives of paper and cardboard food packaging, and can even contaminate the food consumed.
Eurofins says this on its website: “other sources of contamination can be located throughout the manufacturing chain: through contact with fuels, smoke, exhaust gases, lubricating oils, anti-dust agents, surface treatments, etc.”. A plethora of foods would potentially be affected by this hydrocarbon contamination of mineral oils: animal and vegetable fats, fish products, sausages, cereal products, confectionery and cocoa-based products, desserts and ice cream, oilseeds, legumes and nuts.
