Legislative elections in the Hautes-Pyrénées: the RN in force, three-way in the first constituency, uncertainty in the second

The RN confirms by finishing first in the two constituencies of the Hautes-Pyrénées. In the first constituency, there will be a three-way race in the second round. In the second, Benoit Mournet (Ensemble) who came third has put his decision on hold.

A round of elections for confirmation. That of the progression of the National Rally in the whole of the Hautes-Pyrénées, the rebound of the left which came in second place in the two constituencies and the difficulty for the candidates of the presidential majority.

The election seemed to be of great interest to the Bigourdans who went en masse to the polling stations. Participation reached 70.42% in the first and 70.96% in the second.

RN breakthrough confirmed

The National Rally confirms its breakthrough in the European elections. Its candidates, Marie-Christine Sorin (34.09%) and Olivier Monteil (36.96%), already candidates in 2022, have more than doubled their scores. Behind, it is the candidates of the New Popular Front who finish in second position. The outgoing deputy Sylvie Ferrer (1st) defends herself well by obtaining 29.49% of the votes. In the second constituency, Denis Fégné wins 28.09% of the votes.
The presidential majority candidates could not do better than third place. Jean-Bernard Sempastous, beaten by 105 votes in 2022, got involved with the spirit of revenge. Benoit Mournet, outgoing MP, who only had two years to work on the ground finished with 24.91% of the votes. The other candidates shared the remaining crumbs of votes. They did well, but the extreme polarization of the debate gave them no chance.

One or even two triangulars in the second round…

And now, what about the second round? Jean-Bernard Sempastous (Ensemble) did not leave room for doubt for long. Presenting himself as “the candidate of reason”, he announced that he would remain in the second round. He believes in his chances of turning the tables but takes the responsibility of electing a National Rally MP for the first time in the Hautes-Pyrénées.
In the second constituency, the situation is more ambiguous. Benoit Mournet decided to take the time to reflect before announcing his decision: to maintain or withdraw. Here again, a responsibility with potentially serious consequences.
The two candidates of the presidential majority are counting on the fact that the RN candidates would not really have a reservoir of votes and that they would be able to go and find voters from the center and the moderate left put off by LFI. A high-risk calculation that could end with the election of two deputies of the National Rally in the Hautes-Pyrénées next Sunday.
The week promises to be hectic in the Hautes-Pyrénées.
