Legislative elections in the Hautes-Pyrénées: three-way or not in the second constituency?

Olivier Monteil, the RN candidate, came out on top by a wide margin, with nearly 37% of the vote. Behind him, the possibility of a three-way race worries Denis Fégné, who came in second.

The assembly can be dissolved, but the people cannot be dissolved… And some are experiencing this bitterly at the moment. The people have therefore spoken and, three weeks after the “earthquake” of the European elections, have chosen, in the 2nd constituency, to put the RN in the lead, in the person of Olivier Monteil. A half-surprise? Yes and no. Because in some municipalities, while many wanted to believe that the RN had reached the famous “glass ceiling”, Olivier Monteil surpassed Jordan Bardella’s scores on June 9… In Pierrefitte-Nestalas, a land of the left, If Denis Fégné, candidate of the union of the left, comes out on top, he is closely followed by the RN candidate, who received 50 more votes than in the June 9 election. The famous “republican surge”, hoped for by the record number of proxies and a high turnout, did not take place. The increased participation even seems to have benefited the RN… Even if in other, rarer towns and villages, the trend has reversed, the RN’s surge has generally been confirmed at best, or even accentuated… It is no longer a wave, it is a tidal wave.
And in these cases, we have to fight against the tide, and the one who is doing the best is Denis Fégné, candidate of the New Popular Front. The mayor of Ibos wants to believe in his chances of “repelling the National Rally” and does not despair of expanding his New Popular Front and making it a sort of “Republican Front”. And incidentally win this election. Except that Benoît Mournet, the outgoing majority member, has not yet made the decision to withdraw or not. His reasoning is simple: if he does not withdraw, the RN candidate is elected. And if he withdraws, the RN candidate is also elected, the vote transfers rarely responding to mathematical logic. He should make his decision this Monday.
A decision eagerly awaited by Denis Fégné, who hopes that his competitor will opt for “republican withdrawal”. But in this very irrational election, nothing is definitively acquired, the mirages of the past, such as the “republican fronts”, the calls to vote by mayors or influential elected officials, have also definitively been dissolved. The coming week will therefore be, whatever happens, decisive, but for the moment, Olivier Monteil is in a more than favorable ballot. The people have spoken, he still has one more turn to change things, if he wishes. After that, it will be too late…
