In Brest, construction of the Kergoat bridge has begun for the second tram line

Among the new or renovated bridges as part of the My network is growing project for a second tramway line in Brest between the station and the CHU de la Cavale Blanche (and high-level bus service but towards Lambézellec), there is the construction of a small structure, in Kergoat, at the entrance to the Bellevue district. The first stone was officially laid this Monday, July 1, 2024, even if the work really started in May.

The structure (and therefore the tram) will pass above the Vallon de Normandie, otherwise called Toullic ar Ran (“the little frog hole” in Breton). “I hope it’s not a protected species! » joked François Cuillandre, the mayor, between his vice-president for mobility, Yohann Nédélec, and the deputy in Bellevue, Jacqueline Héré.

The bridge will be 56 m long, 15 m wide and 6 m high. The foundations are made of reinforced concrete piles. The work will move forward in one go in the autumn with the arrival, two by two, of 30 large pre-stressed concrete beams measuring 23 m by 80 cm, each weighing 23 tonnes. Thirteen semi-trailers will have brought them. A 21 m high mobile crane, already on site, will install them, as well as a drilling rig.

  • 3 More than €2 million excluding tax, eleven months of work

It is the Marc company which is working on this site. It should last eleven months (and therefore end in spring 2025). The cost is €2.10 million excluding tax.

Elected officials were able to take stock of the construction site this Monday, July 1, 2024. Even if it does not have the scale of that of the bridge which will run alongside that of Schumann. (Photo Le Télégramme/David Cormier)
  • 4 A refined aesthetic

The Kergoat bridge will feature an architecture reminiscent of origami, like the one that will span the Jean-Monnet passage (Place de la Liberté) and also, a little, the Miroir des énergies, which can be found a few meters away, near the science faculty. “It’s contemporary, it will get people talking,” says Yohann Nédélec. From two piers initially planned, the project evolved into a pier under the bridge to reinforce this visual transparency.

The work has started well, but it was this Monday, July 1, 2024 that the first stone (finally assemblies of plastic bricks) was officially laid.

  • 5 “A New Neighborhood”

Even though it is easy to get to Kergoat or Bellevue, including by bus, the project will make it easier to get there by public transport. “This will connect Kergoat and Place Napoléon III, which is also being renovated,” says Jacqueline Héré. “We will rework the valley and better connect it to the banks of the Penfeld. We will keep the sports facilities. The cherry on the cake will be the “From stroller to cane” project, selected as part of the participatory budget. We will have a new neighborhood!” This will involve installing floor markings, play and relaxation furniture (table, games table, library) and sports equipment (elliptical bike, ping-pong table). Movable equipment and light fittings.
