Legislative elections in Lyon: the edifying figures of the progress of the RN which assassinated LR

“Lyon, true to its title of capital of the Resistance, has demonstrated that we could put a brake on the RN”: this formula launched by the environmentalist mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet on Sunday evening to highlight a clear wave of the left in the city is indisputable. But his celebrations over the RN “brake” in the third largest city in France must be qualified.

For this 1st round of the early legislative elections in June 2024, the RN reached records in the four Lyon constituencies, even qualifying in two of them for the second round. Unprecedented for the far-right party led by Jordan Bardella.

In the districts (see our graphs), the National Rally’s scores even reached unprecedented scores in Lyon. The party progressed in the nine districts, even exceeding 20% ​​in the second district.

The RN qualified in two constituencies in Lyon

If he has no chance of victory, the RN qualifies in two out of four constituencies in Lyon. The party achieves 18% in the 1st and 4th. He is less strong in the other two with 14% and does not pass the second round.

In 2022, he failed to pass the first round, too low in the number of votes and penalized by lower participation. In the Rhône, the RN even came first in four out of 14 constituencies and appears for the first time capable of winning seats in the department.

From the point of view of the progression of its score, it is in the 4th that it is strongest (+10 points compared to 2022).

In the districts, progress everywhere

More locally, at the district level, the RN is also progressing quietly. The city of Lyon confirms its position on the left with candidates from the New Popular Front in the lead everywhere in 2024 except in the 6th arrondissement which remains acquired by Anne Brugnera (Ensemble).

Jordan Bardella’s party made clear progress in the nine boroughs this Sunday. It is the 1st district which resists the RN the most with 9.08% even if its score has doubled since 2012.

But more surprisingly, the RN achieved very high scores in all the other districts, exceeding or even coming close to 20% in the 2nd, 5th, 6th and 8th arrondissements.

The RN erased Les Républicains in Lyon

The trend was already visible in the European elections on June 9: the National Rally overtook the right-wing Les Républicains party in Lyon. This was confirmed this Sunday. The RN arrived ahead of LR in the four Lyon constituencies.

The right is fourth in all the districts of Lyon where the RN manages to overtake it. Bardella’s party is even ahead in the 2nd and 6th arrondissement, although they are led by LR mayors.
