2024 Legislative Elections: The Uncertain Duel in the 3rd Constituency of Aveyron Between the LR-RN Candidate and the Incumbent Renaissance

On the evening of the first round in the third constituency of Aveyron Pierre-Antoine Fevre (LR-RN) finished at 35.45% ahead of outgoing MP Jean-François Rousset (Renaissance) at 32.45%. In third position Richard Bouigue (Nouveau Front Populaire) at 28.81%.

So the label vote played a full role in the third constituency of Aveyron. The parachuted candidate Pierre-Antoine Fevre, bearing the double stamp LR (Eric Ciotti version) and RN, managed to rise to the top on the evening of the first round this Sunday, June 30. He actually accumulated a little more than 18,000 votes for a final total of 35.45%. Behind, the outgoing Renaissance MP Jean-François Rousset rose to 32.45% (16,514 votes).

Third in this political trio was the candidate of the New Popular Front, Richard Bouigue (28.81% for 14,660 votes). It should be noted that the native of Aveyron and adopted Parisian still managed the feat of coming out on top in the two main communes of the constituency: Millau (35.60%) and Saint-Affrique (39%).

The LR-RN candidate’s blitzkrieg campaign

We therefore understand that this first round was truly played out in the small or medium-sized towns of the third constituency. The very ones that Pierre-Antoine Fevre has never seen in his life. Present for a lightning local campaign a few days last week, the LR-RN candidate ultimately took advantage of the electoral momentum of Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella’s party on the evening of the European elections.

In Aveyron, the scores were even historic with 28.37% in Millau and 25.59% in Saint-Affrique. This Sunday, June 30, Pierre-Antoine Fevre obtained similar, or even higher, scores in his two municipalities: 31.92% in Millau and 29% in Saint-Affrique. The momentum therefore seems strong for the far-right party in the third constituency.

But the outgoing Renaissance MP Jean-François Rousset is not “abandoned” for all that. With a total of 32.45%, a gap of three points with the LR-RN candidate, he can believe in his star. An Aveyron star for which he will have deployed a lot of energy during an electoral campaign, necessarily, short and exceptionally atypical. Still present last Friday on the Millau market, in particular, the parliamentarian elected in 2022 for a first term in the Assembly also worked to recall his local roots.

Renaissance MP increases his score from the first round of 2022 by seven points

In Montlaur, first of all, its village. Then with the residents, farmers and professionals of the district. Obviously insufficient to completely erase the deep resentment towards the presidential majority. Even if Jean-François Rousset managed to increase – very significantly by almost seven points – his score for the first round of 2022 (32.45% against 25.15%). At the time, just over two years ago, he faced a Nupes candidate (Michel Rhin).

This time, his left-wing opponent was Richard Bouigue under the label of the New Popular Front. An Aveyronnais from Paris, necessarily little known in the constituency, who nevertheless more than did well in the electoral game by coming third (28.81%). Leading in Millau (35.60%) and Saint-Affrique (39%), he was hardly able to be satisfied with this and should, logically, follow the national instructions of the New Popular Front by withdrawing from the second round in favor of of the Renaissance candidate.
