Triangular, withdrawals… When will the candidates for the second round of the legislative elections be known?

The second round of the legislative elections will take place on Sunday, July 7. Voters will sometimes have to choose between three or four candidates still in the running. A list of candidates who will remain is still being drawn up.

One more week to convince. Since the publication of the results of the first round of the legislative elections, France has officially entered the second round. But when will the candidates still in the running be known?

“Candidates admitted to the second round must formalize their application before Tuesday July 2, 2024 at 6 p.m., by submitting a new application form,” indicates the Ministry of the Interior.

As a reminder, a candidate must have obtained at least 12.5% of the votes cast to be qualified. If only one candidate crosses this threshold, the second highest political score is also qualified. But in the event that no candidate meets this threshold condition, the two candidates who came in first can remain in the second round.

The question of triangulars and the “dam”

But the list of candidates still vying for the title of deputy is not obvious. Up to 306 three-way races involving the National Rally (33.14% in the first round), the New Popular Front (27.99%), Ensemble (20.76%) or Les Républicains (10.74%) are expected. Four-way races could also take place in five constituencies.

But the match is not yet played, as uncertainty hovers around the question of alliances and withdrawals. Until now, only the New Popular Front has clearly called for withdrawal in the event of a 3rd position against the RN, regardless of which party comes second.

On the side of the presidential camp, the line is more blurred. According to our information, the Ensemble camp must prepare on a case-by-case basis the constituencies where it will withdraw to support another candidacy against the RN.

The head of state called last night for a “large, clearly Democratic and Republican rally” against the far right. Other voices in his camp, such as Bruno Le Maire or Aurore Bergé, indicated that they did not want to support La France insoumise candidates against the RN.

For at least 76 constituencies, the question of the second round does not even arise. From the first round, 37 RN deputies, 32 NFP deputies, 2 Ensemble deputies and 1 LR deputy were elected by obtaining at least 50% of the votes cast.
