The RN had taken first place in the European elections, in all the municipalities of the sixth constituency, with the exception of Biarritz and Guéthary. Three weeks later, Jordan Bardella’s party, represented by Victor Lastécouères, had to settle for third place in the main cities. However, with a percentage of 25% of the votes cast, a far cry from the 9.9% recorded in 2022. If we think in terms of votes, the party has more than tripled its voters in this territory, with a locally unknown candidate.

Did the RN get all the votes? Victor Lastécouères is convinced that it did not: “I think that the Republican voters understood the stakes of this election and I know that they will know how to vote well in the three-way race that is coming,” he said this Sunday evening.

Emmanuelle Brisson, the LR candidate, won 11.62% of the vote (fourth place), satisfied to surpass François-Xavier Bellemy’s score in the European elections. “I will not give any voting instructions for the second round. Voters are free.”

“The central block is there”

This also satisfies Christian Devèze, Macronist candidate under the Modem-Ensemble label. He is convinced that the losses from LR to the RN will be minimal and expects to win back these voters (8,546), as well as those who voted for Jean Tellechéa of the Basque Nationalist Party (3,712). “Peio Dufau has won all the votes from the left,” Devèze continues. “I am satisfied to be in second place. I am placed between the two candidates at the extremes. The central bloc is therefore there, with solid positions and values that will appeal to those who do not make a pact with the devil.”

Peio Dufau knows it, the second round will be hotly contested. “A lot of people have mobilized over the last fortnight. The goal is to seek out the voices that are missing so that it becomes a reality and that the change is us facing Macronism and facing the extreme right. We are here for the territory, for local agriculture, for housing, for the people who make the territory live. We are the only ones with a program and we are the only alternative. »
