Update June 29, 2024 at 11:00 p.m.

If Saturday was rainy, Sunday will be even worse: the risk of violent storms will be greater and there is even talk of a potential for tornadoes. Details.

In short :

  • Sunday even more unstable;

  • Risk of violent thunderstorms for a large part of the province;

  • Potential for tornadoes in places.

Fierce denouement

We can’t say that we’re spoiled this weekend when it comes to good weather: rain has dominated the entire province since Saturday morning and it hasn’t said its last word. In total, up to 50 mm of rain is expected in some places by Sunday evening, particularly in the Capitale-Nationale, Beauce and Estrie regions.

Added to this is a significant risk of violent thunderstorms: the passage of a cold front on Sunday will play spoilsport over a large part of Quebec. Essentially, this risk of violent thunderstorms will be increased on Sunday due to the energy available in the air.

Sunbursts will fuel this instability and contribute to the formation of supercells. Moreover, these would be powerful enough to generate a potential for tornadoes: a risk of rotation will be found in an area south of the St. Lawrence River, including Beauce, Estrie, Montérégie and Chaudière-Appalaches. This risk of rotation will be present from the end of the morning.

However, these are not the only areas that will feel the wrath of the cold front: the eastern regions will also get their fair share. The risk of violent thunderstorms will move eastward to affect the Lower St. Lawrence, Saguenay and Upper North Shore in the afternoon.

Remember that during violent storms, the gusts are strong, the rain is torrential and hailstones with a diameter of more than two centimeters are possible. These heavy rains can cause flash floods and flooding.

Reward

Sunday evening will sound the death knell for unstable weather. From Monday, the sun and comfortable temperatures will return. Consequently, thousands of Quebecers will transport their boxes under a completely clear sky and in a context of relatively dry air: the passage of the cold front on Sunday will have chased away the humidity. This good weather will continue on Wednesday, before the arrival of a new system.
