In the “Water and climate” approach, the Gard Departmental Council is organizing the second phase of consultation. The floor will be given to the Gardois to find concrete solutions to fight against climate change.
In 2018, the Department of Gard requested a study to make a diagnosis on different environmental aspects: to know what the climatic developments were from the 60s to the present day, to know the current situation in Gard and to understand how the situation would evolve in 2050 and 2100. After two years of research, the final study was produced in 2020. The analyzes confirm that global warming is taking hold in the Gard in its four territories: the Cévennes, the Camargue, the Garrigues and the Rhone Belt. “From 1960 to 2020, we see a change in temperatures of 1.7 degrees on average and an increase of around 4 degrees by 2100. This heat will have a direct effect on our landscapes which will resemble northern Africa by 2100”, announces Bérengère Noguier, vice-president of the Gard Departmental Council and delegate for ecological transition and Biodiversity.
Following the results of the study, the Department put in place a consultation plan, in order to find solutions together. During the first phase, organized from June 10 to 27, 2024 around seven territorial meetings, 250 volunteer Gardois participated. These discussion times were set up in the form of workshops. In addition, the website eauclimat.gard.fr recorded more than 183 participations. The objective of this first phase was to find out how climate change was perceived by residents and to know the feelings in each territory.
For the second phase, solutions are expected during the next discussion sessions. These meetings are open to all Gard citizens who wish to bring keys or discuss climate issues, in the following areas: land use, drinking water supply, agriculture, tourism in connection with aquatic environments, forests and landscapes. Four territorial meetings are planned soon:
– November 25 at 6 p.m. at Grand'Combe, in the Marcel Pagnol room
– November 29 at 6 p.m. at Pont du Gard, at the Auditorium Pitot
– December 3 at 6 p.m. in Vigan at André Chamson college, 1 avenue Jean-Jaurès
– December 4 at 6 p.m. in Nîmes, at the Auditorium of the Departmental Archives, 365 rue du Forez)
This step will be used to build a forum planned for June 2025. Municipalities and elected officials will be able to access it if necessary, in order to put into practice the action plan produced by the Gard Departmental Council, with the help of citizens. .
