He had moved the OM supporters by coming to play “Jump”, the club’s anthem when the players entered the pitch, on the piano in a stripped-down version in November 2019 before a Marseille-Brest match, when he was only 15 years old. Mourad Tsimpou, the young 19-year-old musician from Marseille, died this week following a rare liver disease from which he suffered since childhood.

Olympique de Marseille posted a message in tribute to Tsimpou, “a boy who expressed like expressed his love for Marseille and OM like no one else using his piano”addressing himselfs sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

A tribute coming to the Vélodrome?

Benoît Payan, the mayor of Marseille, also issued his own statement. “It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of Mourad Tsimpou, a genius Marseille pianist. His unique game, so young, impressed and moved us all. He made us so proud. Marseille, his city, pays homage to him. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult ordeal. His music and his poetry will remain.”

It is very likely that a tribute will be paid to Mourad Tsimpou at the Vélodrome, whether during a pre-season match or a Ligue 1 encounter.
