Intense thunderstorms in Belgium on Saturday evening: hail and strong gusts of wind, one province on orange alert, two on yellow alert

Faced with this bad weather, a yellow alert for thunderstorms will be active on Saturday from 5:00 p.m. in the province of Luxembourg, and will change to orange between 10:00 p.m. and Sunday 9:00 a.m. A yellow alert is also planned from 7:00 p.m. in the province of Namur and from 9:00 p.m. in the province of Liège, until Sunday morning.

A rainstorm zone will reach the south of the country in the evening and will extend over the three southeastern provinces. Average accumulations of 20 to 40 liters per square meter will be likely, with more localized peaks at 50 l/m², or even a little more.

Strong gusts and hail will also be possible under the first thunderstorms, mainly in the province of Luxembourg. In this same region, accumulations could exceed 60 l/m², or even more in places, announces the IRM.

Belgium will suffer the effects of a “cold drop” or “polar drop” this weekend: yellow or even orange alert in sight

The storms will evacuate towards Germany on Sunday morning.

This precipitation may also be present in the center of the country during the night, but “their intensity will be less, currently not justifying a warning”, specifies the IRM.

Number 1722 activated

The number 1722 dedicated to non-urgent interventions by the fire brigade was activated on Saturday due to the risk of storms or flooding in the evening, the FPS Interior indicated in a press release. This is to prevent emergency lines from being clogged with calls for interventions that can wait. In the event of damage caused by a storm or water damage for which assistance from the fire brigade is required, this number should be dialed. If a life is in danger, 112 should be called.

The FPS also recommends using the electronic counter 1722.be, considered “the most direct way to request help from firefighters in situations where no life is in danger”.
