Thunderstorms: 34 departments, including Deux-Sèvres and Vienne, on orange alert on Saturday

The orange storm warning was extended to 34 departments by Météo-France on Saturday, June 29. Violent phenomena are expected.

After an initial alert was issued on Friday, Météo-France has decided to extend the alert zone.

This Saturday, June 29, 2024, the departments of Tarn, Aveyron, Lot, Cantal, Puy-de-Dôme, Loire, Rhône, Allier and Ain have been placed on orange “thunderstorm” alert for this Saturday afternoon.

They have thus joined the 25 departments which already were: Charente, Charente-Maritime, Cher, Gironde, Landes, Deux-Sèvres, Vienne, and all the departments of Grand Est and Burgundy-Franche-Comté. In total, 34 departments are now affected.

Météo-France has also placed almost all departments on alert, except those in Brittany and the coasts of the Channel, the North Sea and the Mediterranean.

50 to 80 mm of rain

This Saturday morning, strong storms affect the regions from Landes to Poitou. They are mainly accompanied by heavy rain, and locally by hail. The cumulative rainfall over a few hours can reach 50 to 80 mm.

This Saturday afternoon and evening: a stormy burst will circulate from the southwest to the northeast of the country. “Violent phenomena could be observed in Auvergne and Occitanie”warns Météo-France.

Indre, Loir-et-Cher and Loiret under threat

In Center-Val de Loire, this Saturday morning, storms moving north over the west of the region “will be heavily rainy”. If they do not require orange alert at this stage, a “Worsening of this rainy nature could however justify it”warns Météo-France.

Saturday afternoon and evening, “strong thunderstorms could require an extension of the orange alert » in Indre, Loir-et-Cher and Loiret, concludes Météo-France.
