If they feel they lack the perspective to assess possible benefits, the exhibitors of the Organic Market association persist and sign. From July 10 until August 28, the said market which they manage, located on Place d’Aquitaine, hosts a series of cultural events. Classical music, guitar and voice concert, DJ set and author meeting are, among other things, on the program for the Wednesday meeting.

“This is our 2024 season,” insists Pierre Pernix, president of the association and organic market gardener, who has been present at Place d’Aquitaine every week for six years. “The idea is to act as if we, the organic market, were a cultural institution, like a theater. We are not just a place where you buy cheese and honey, we are also a meeting place.”

On June 6, a guitarist came to play several covers, without having been invited. The Organic Market association welcomes musicians who come.

Launched two years ago, the concept was designed to breathe new life into the weekly event, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025. The Covid crisis and then the weather hazards have made life difficult for the twenty or so exhibitors it has (1). Régis Decamps knows something about this. For the past month, the goat farmer based in Montpezat-d’Agenais has only travelled to Villeneuve once a fortnight, thus putting an end to a thirteen-year-old habit. The bad weather has caused feeding problems for his animals, which have produced less milk.

“We are less busy than a supermarket but we bring more than them, we bring life back to the center of Villeneuve,” says Pierre Pernix.

According to him, the entertainment “enlivens the market enormously, makes it more pleasant. Regulars already meet here, but I think it could encourage more people to come.” And he adds: “I might be bad, but on the Saturday market, which I also take part in, there is no entertainment, except when there is a prize that might be awarded. There, we have the right to music, extras.” The association of which he is a member has no shortage of ideas in terms of entertainment. Jacques Réjalot, from the Pichon estate, for example, wants to “create a taste workshop.” Watch this space.
