For several days, a persistent rumor about the administrative closure of the Mamoudzou covered market has worried traders, sparking intense anger among them in the face of uncertainty regarding the future of their activity.

On September 24, an inspection was carried out by a health and safety commission of the prefecture. This noted various problems linked, among other things, to unusable fire extinguishers or the presence of rodents within this building.

This is not disputed by the traders, starting with Jean Barrège, a veteran of the place. This trader, who has been working at the Mamoudzou covered market for around twenty years, nevertheless does not accept that he and his peers are hostage to a management problem between the chamber of commerce and industry and the general council. .

An opinion shared by Moinecha Harouna, a trader in the market who explains that she is facute “moral harassment.”

On the side of the departmental council, a public market has been launched in order to find a company which will take care of the structural work of the building to improve the working conditions of traders.

The prefecture, the departmental council and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) have planned to meet on December 5 to discuss the progress of this project.

A crucial meeting which should give more information to traders.
