While an episode of snow will affect the habits of the Normans this THURSDAY November 21, 2024the Department of Manche ensures that it is ready to face the climatic hazards on the roads this winterthanks to its winter service plan.
The objective is to intervene as quickly as possible on the roads, while informing the Manchois in real time about climatic and traffic conditions.
Implementation of the advanced winter viability plan
A plan which was initially to be put in place from Friday November 29 (until Monday March 3). But the Department's 300 agents will be able to clear snow-covered roads from this Thursday.
With increased human and material resources to prioritize those close to 8,000 kilometers of roadsthe Department's teams and its thirty trucks equipped with salt spreaders and snow clearing blades begin their work on the 1,935 kilometers of main roads, also called priority network.
Then come the 1,200 kilometers of the secondary network – the departmental axes – then the 4,655 kilometers of the rest of the network.
7,320 tonnes of salt
The winter of 2023-2024 was mild, with few frosts and snowy days.
During an exceptional winter, such as that of 2012-2013, greater resources were mobilized. For example, 205,375 km were covered and 4,628 tonnes of salt were used. This year, the salt storage capacitydistributed across around thirty road maintenance centersis 7,320 tonnes.
Furthermore, to complete this departmental action, certain municipalities or communities of municipalities ont signed an agreement with the departmental council to ensure their own snow removal. More than 160 agreements have been signed for a length of 790 km.
