Ontario Premier Doug Ford is kicking MPP Goldie Ghamari out of the Conservative caucus after she chatted online with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson, who he called Islamophobic.
In a brief statement, Mr. Ford explains that his decision follows repeated cases of serious lack of judgment
from the deputy of Carleton.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims had been calling for Ms. Ghamari’s expulsion from the caucus for several days.
It is unacceptable for an elected MP in Ontario to meet a notorious Islamophobe who was imprisoned for assaulting a police officer
the organization wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.
Tommy Robinson is co-founder of the English Defence Leaguea far-right movement.
I didn’t know, said the MP.
MP Ghamari claimed on X that she Robinson before our meeting”,”text”:”did not know Mr. Robinson’s background before our meeting”}}”>did not know Mr. Robinson’s background prior to our meeting
adding that she condemns all forms of Islamophobia and anti-Semitism
.
The Iranian-Canadian woman said she agreed to speak with him because he wanted to talk about the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the fact that Canada recently designated them a terrorist group.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims questions this excuse
. Why would she meet a non-Canadian? […] without having done a minimum of research on him
added the organization on X.
Following her expulsion from the Conservative caucus on Friday, Ghamari posted the following message on Twitter without providing details: When one door closes, another opens.
