Will Lula’s party support Morocco?

After the positive declarations of the President of the Brazilian Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, last October, it is the turn of the Brazilian Workers’ Party, the ruling party, to send a signal of support for Morocco’s efforts to resolve the conflict in Sahara by enshrining the autonomy proposal as a solution. Lula’s Party has long supported the Polisario separatists.

As a reminder, on October 14, the President of the Brazilian Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, praised Morocco’s attitude in this matter, following his discussions with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, declaring that “the policy followed by Morocco regarding the Sahara question is characterized by seriousness.”

Adding that Brazil had taken a formal position on this issue, he added that “this is the opportune moment for (Brazil) to consider the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco as a realistic and pragmatic basis for a political solution consistent with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.”

This time it is the Workers’ Party, which leads the Brazilian government to make a comment along the same lines. In a statement to MAP, Romenio Pereira, secretary for international relations of President Lula’s Party, estimated that the autonomy plan for the Sahara presented by Morocco “is based on the principles of dialogue and international law and should contribute to the well-being of the populations concerned”.

“I think Brazil should provide more expressive support for the initiative proposed by the kingdom and continue to support these efforts and initiatives that promote peace and stability in the region”he said.

Brazilian initiatives supporting Morocco in safeguarding its territorial integrity in the Sahara seem to be gaining greater momentum and should undoubtedly lead to a modification of the position of Lula’s party, which supports separatist theses.

Brazil does not recognize the self-proclaimed “sadr” of the Polisario separatists financed by Algeria. In 2023, the Brazilian Senate adopted a motion of support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative in the Sahara, calling for “more expressive” support for efforts “serious and reliable” of the Kingdom in the search for a solution to this regional conflict.

“Brazil has always taken a constructive and sensible position regarding this regional conflict. The time is right for our country to consider the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco as a realistic and pragmatic basis for a political solution in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.underlines said motion, signed by 28 Brazilian senators from different parties.
