The Clermontais intercommunal wastewater treatment plant has great ambitions. Both in volume and quality of treatment. The intercommunal equipment, inaugurated in Paulhan, combines different processes which make it possible to improve the quality of effluent.

Bacteriological processes, UV treatment, reed beds… In Paulhan, the new intercommunal wastewater treatment plant, Stepi, is pulling out all the stops to advance water treatment. Useful for the municipalities of Aspiran, Usclas-d'Hérault and therefore Paulhan, this new equipment from Com Com du Clermontais is now designed for 11,800 inhabitants (nearly double the previous one). Costing €3.80 million, it was inaugurated on November 20 near the football stadium. “It is obvious that neither Aspiran, nor Usclas, nor Paulhan, would have had the capacity to carry out such a work alone”stressed Claude Valéro, mayor of Paulhan.

Improved bathing water quality

Above all, this modern equipment now makes it possible to produce better quality effluent. “A few decades ago, in the upper cantons, sanitation treatment still often left something to be desired. Some mayors then said that (these coarse effluents) “feed the carp” in the rivers.” recalls Marie Passieux, departmental councilor and vice-president of the Com du Clermontais. “The work that is being done today on the Com makes it possible to discharge water into the Hérault that is more than 95% treated in this river which is the backbone of our department”appreciates the chosen one. “This effectively improves the quality of the water upstream of a bathing site,” confirmed the representative of the Water Agency who also highlighted “very important work carried out, at the level of these three municipalities, on the sanitation networks.” Achievements which allow rainwater to be separated from wastewater before it arrives at the Step. Which optimizes the water treatment cycle in Step.

Co-financing of achievements

Co-financing of Stepi alone: Water Agency: €820,367, Department: €1.146 million, CCC: €1.854 million. Companies involved in construction: Saur; Marcory construction; SARL Baldare; JP Industry.

Reduce costs through pooling

“This station required a development phase of almost 5 years. It is now in operation. Its size allows operating costs to be optimized”measured Claude Revel, president of Com com. Joseph Rodriguez, vice-president of the CCC responsible for resources, welcomed, like many on these subjects (Stepi, transition to management and creation of the Clermontais Intercommunal Water Pole), the importance of the contribution of the former director, Julien Golembiewski* , had been decisive. “He handled it masterfully.”underlined the elected official.

Julien Golembiewski is today director of the Grand-Pic-Saint-Loup Community Water service. He was replaced at the CCC by Michèle Glaas.
