What does the new poster for the 42nd Brive Book Fair, signed Mathieu Persan, look like?

The work of illustrator Mathieu Persan, the poster highlights the Guierle lighthouse which illuminates a flight of book pages in a starry sky.

“I wanted to show the light that could emerge from literature, which is like a beacon in the night.”

After the river of books in 2023, the illustrator Mathieu Persan signs for the second time the poster for the Book Fair which was unveiled this Friday, June 28. He puts the spotlight on the Guierle lighthouse, in a refined and retro style which is his creative mark.

An event, a monument

The mayor, Frédéric Soulier appreciates it. “This poster links an event, the Fair, to a monument, the lighthouse,” he summarizes.

“The poster was created six months ago. At the time, we did not have the political circumstances that we have today, underlines Mathieu Persan. Literature is the possibility of living lives other than our own and of understanding others. This is what must guide us more than ever in the coming weeks.”

What was the starting point of his work? “The goal is first to find an idea, an angle, to step back from what you have to illustrate,” he replies. “You have to think, try, make mistakes… You don’t have the right to disappoint. Our role is to propose, to do the best we can. The greatest satisfaction is to see that it pleases and that people tell you that you hit the mark.”

The illustrator is a big movie fan. “The Brive lighthouse looks like the town hall from the film Back to the future. This poster must represent what the Fair represents, a celebration of books and writing which are an elevation that we need. »
