Justin Trudeau’s government is expected to announce Thursday a reduction in the GST on essential products, a measure welcomed by the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) who has nevertheless torn up the agreement with the Liberal Party of Canada (PLC).
With this “GST holiday for the winter”, the Liberal Prime Minister would therefore partly comply with a request from the New Democrats who launched the campaign to “eliminate the GST on essential products”, the party indicated in a press release on Thursday.
“On Thursday, we expect the Liberal government to announce a GST exemption for a number of items in response to the NDP’s demands,” said its leader, Jagmeet Singh, in writing.
On the other hand, “this is far from being the substantial and permanent boost that the NDP wishes to grant to Canadians,” he said, accusing the Liberals of letting people down “by choosing to grant a short-term GST holiday, on certain items only.
The “Globe and Mail” reported Wednesday that Prime Minister Trudeau was preparing to announce GST relief on Thursday with financial accessibility measures worth several billions.
“The NDP will vote in favor of this measure because workers desperately need a boost,” promised Mr. Singh, adding that his party will continue its campaign “to permanently eliminate the GST on essential products and bills monthly.
