This Saturday evening, the trumpets of Avignon will sound for the first curtain raiser of the 78th edition of the Avignon Festival: 35 shows, including 80% creations, will be offered from June 29 to July 21 in 21 Avignon venues and 15 surrounding communities.

The opening of the festival at the Cour d’Honneur is entrusted tomorrow evening to Angélica Liddell, radical choreographer, adored, misunderstood, mocked, starred. Another theater icon, Krzysztof Warlikowski is back at the Festival. The Comédie-Française at the Boulbon quarry
In 2016, the Comédie-Française impressed festival-goers by performing The Damned in the Court of Honor in Avignon. The troupe is back this summer from June 30 to July 16 in the Boulbon quarry with Hecuba, not Hecuba by Tiago Rodrigues. Boris Charmatz returns to the pitch at the Bagatelle stadium
A regular at the Festival, Boris Charmatz, today director of the Tanztheater, the legendary Pina Bausch theater in Wuppertal (Germany), is the artist behind this 78th edition. He will be there”from the first to the last day” with three pieces. Circles opens the Festival tomorrow, Sunday and Monday July 1st on the lawn of the Bagatelle stadium on the island of Barthelasse: two hundred people are invited to this three-hour workshop around circle dancing, free entry. He will also present Liberty Cathedral from July 5 to 9 always at the Bagatelle stadium, to the sound of bells and organs. Finally, Forever Café Müller according to Pina Bausch is played by July 14 to 21 at La Fabrica. “Café Müller is a play about desire and bodies searching for each other.” explains Charmatz, who staged the play with four different casts for two hours straight.
