PUB ROYAL, the musical, reopens its doors in Quebec

Musical comedy Pub Royal returned to the Grand Théâtre, in Quebec, this week (June 26 to 30), in the form of a series of performances throughout the province. Introduced last November and December, the universe of Pub Royal is both extravagant and touching, and as unifying as it is introspective. It is therefore a good representation of the music of Cowboys Fringants.

A new twist on songs

Since the songs on the album Pub Royal (released in April) are now more familiar, those which are part of the musical (welcome to our house, Loulou vs Loulou, Unanswered questions, Let fine you show) were easier to sing along to, even though the crowd remained reserved for the majority of the show.

Other songs from their repertoire, such as All houses are the same, America cries et Shootershave developed new meanings. The music of Cowboys Fringants has always been filled with relatable characters and those who are at the Pub Royal have strong personalities, stories to tell, and they feel lost and defeated or lived quietly in everyday life.

Life as a parody

Pub Royal features seven singing actors/actresses, seven dancers/dancers and six circus performers. At first, the atmosphere is excessive, due to the acrobatics and exaggerated movements, but you quickly get used to it. In the second act, the story becomes a little darker, but still maintains a humorous tone. Ultimately, the pub is not only a family place to forget our troubles, but also a kind of metaphor for belonging and hope.

As in Montreal in December, the crowd stood up and applauded rhythmically for the finale where all the participants on stage sang Shooting Stars. They left the stage as an image of Cowboys Fringants was projected into the mirror in front of the bar.
