NHL announces 2023-24 All-Star teams

LAS VEGAS (June 27, 2024) — Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon, who won the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player and the Ted Lindsay Trophy as the best player among his NHLPA peers during the presentation of the 2024 NHL trophies, leads the list of players named to the 2023-24 NHL First All-Star Team.

MacKinnon earns his first First Team All-Star selection, having previously been named to the Second Team twice in 2017-18 and 2019-20. He is the seventh active centre to be named to the First Team, joining Connor McDavid (five times), Sidney Crosby (four), Evgeni Malkin (three), Leon Draisaitl (one), Auston Matthews (one) and John Tavares (one).

Joining MacKinnon on the first team are right wing Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who earns the honour for the third time, and left wing Artemi Panarin, who is a first-team all-star for the second time. The defencemen are Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks (first appearance) and Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators (third appearance). Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets is a first-team all-star for the second time.

Kucherov was the first choice in all 187 ballots at right wing, becoming the first unanimous selection to the NHL All-Star team in 22 years. In 2001-02, Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames received all 60 first-place votes, also at right wing.

At the center of the Second Team All-Star trio is Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers, who earns a spot on the Second Team for the second time, in addition to his five First Team selections. McDavid’s seven total picks represent the third-best total among all active players, behind only Alex Ovechkin (12) and Sidney Crosby (eight).

Another member of the second team is Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar, who was named to an NHL All-Star team for a fourth consecutive season (first team in 2020-21 and 2021-22, second team in 2022-23 and 2023-24).

The other players selected are making their debut on the Second All-Star Team: Vancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko, New York Rangers defenseman Adam Fox, Boston Bruins right wing David Pastrnak and Nashville Predators left wing Filip Forsberg. Fox and Pastrnak have each earned a spot on the First All-Star Team twice.

The vote was conducted among members of the Professional Hockey Journalists Association (PHWA) after the conclusion of the regular season.
