Morocco was ranked 98th in the world out of 141 countries in the 2024 Global Knowledge Index, published by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation and the United Nations Development Program.
With a score of 42.8 points, Morocco places itself at the bottom of the world average established at 47.8 points, which reveals significant gaps in education and training.
Based on several indices grouping together indicators linked to different levels of learning, the Index awards a score after an average counting 17 sub-indexes. It is based on a global assessment of pre-university education, technical education and vocational training, higher education, information and communication technologies, research, development and innovation and ‘economy.
One of the other indicators selected concerns the environment and looks at the social, economic, health and environmental context in each of the countries evaluated. On this level, Morocco’s score is 95 out of 141.
Thus, Morocco occupies 102nd place in terms of higher education with a score of 37.7 points, and 100th place out of 141 countries in the technical education and vocational training index.
In terms of pre-university education it is ranked 93rd and 96 for research, development and innovation. Morocco’s “positive” indicators, concerning indicators such as the net enrollment rate in primary education where it ranks 26th and 55th in terms of enrollment rate in the first cycles of secondary education. We can also cite the public budget devoted to primary and secondary education which were one of Morocco’s strong points.
Secondary indicators also brought down Morocco’s score, and this is the percentage of workforce with advanced levels of education which places it in 122nd place in the world and 138th place in the index measuring unemployment rate in this category.
It appears that the Global Knowledge Index 2024 report shows that Morocco still has work to do to catch up with other leading countries in terms of education.
In a broader context, first place was awarded to Sweden with a score of 68.3 points, followed by Finland and Switzerland. The United Arab Emirates also tops the list of Arab countries, ranking 26th with a score of 60.9 points, followed by Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Oman.
And in terms of the lowest rankings globally, it appears that Chad, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo take the last three places.
Canada tops the pre-university education index with a score of 90.2 points, followed by Belarus and Portugal. China also ranks first in the technical education and vocational training index, while Luxembourg ranks first in the higher education index with a score of 67.9 points, followed by Switzerland and the United States of America. As for Israel, it tops the world list in the research, development and innovation index.
