These service stops are necessary to allow night work on railway infrastructure. In France, the Épernay – Château-Thierry section requires particular attention, while in Germany, work is planned on the Berlin – Mannheim line. As journeys cannot be diverted at the risk of significant delays, carriers preferred to temporarily interrupt the service to ensure customer care.

Impact on Travelers

To reach Berlin, travellers will be able to opt for day trains, including a combination of a TGV inOui to Karlsruhe or Frankfurt, then an ICE to the German capital, for a total journey of around 8 hours 30 minutes. Another option is to take a Eurostar to Brussels, followed by the European Sleeper night train, which runs three times a week and takes around 11 hours to reach Berlin. As for those wishing to travel to Vienna, they can take the Nightjet Brussels-Vienna, which is not affected by this interruption and will continue to operate as usual, three times a week.

A European Revival of Night Trains

Despite these challenges, demand for night train travel remains strong in Europe. ÖBB plans to continue investing in new trains to meet this growing demand. The temporary suspension of the Paris-Berlin and Paris-Vienna routes, although inconvenient, is a necessary step to ensure better service quality in the long term.
