Since Monday November 18, 2024, the free trade agreement between the Mercosur countries and the European Union has been under review at the G20.

The agricultural sector fears unfair competition from these products from South America which do not have the same standards as those imposed by the European Union. So to express their disagreement, farmers are mobilizing on a national scale.

In the English Channel, Young Farmers have chosen the colorful and gentle method, “so as not to annoy the population”.

Monday November 18, 2024, around 7 p.m., the Young Farmers moved three construction site radars and symbolically turned them towards the sea, on the Corniche of Barneville-Carteret to “put the sea under surveillance because it is bythe west coast where products imported from Mercosur will pass.

We didn't want any degradation. It is a symbolic image but strong at the same time.

Etienne Cousin – general secretary of JA 50

Faced with the threat of Mercosur, the farmers of the Channel have not said their last word. They are planning a “panel covering of panels throughout the department” operation.

Depending on the outcome of Mercosur, the agricultural sector is ready to move to the next level “we will be very vigilant, we are possibly considering blockages of goods coming from abroad and visits to certain agri-food industries which often make ready-made meals with imported products.”
