Moroccan law enforcement made a major drug seizure on Wednesday, June 26, intercepting 3,382 tons of cannabis resin in the Casablanca region, as well as 172 kilograms on the border with the Spanish enclave of Sebta.

A few days after the arrest of a Moroccan resident abroad (MRE) trying to cross the border with 39 kg of cannabis in his vehicle, Moroccan authorities intercepted two other vehicles loaded with drugs.

The largest seizure took place in Casablanca, where the prefectural judicial police service, in coordination with the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), confiscated 3,382 tonnes of cannabis resin.

Two individuals, suspected of being part of an international criminal network trafficking drugs and psychotropic substances, were arrested on the highway in Mohammedia. During the search of their vehicles, 93 bales of cannabis resin were discovered.

The suspects were placed in police custody and are subject to a judicial investigation supervised by the competent public prosecutor’s office. The objective is to dismantle the ramifications of the criminal network and identify other accomplices involved in these illegal activities.

Seizure at the Spanish border

On the border with the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, customs officers and police foiled an attempt to smuggle 172.8 kilograms of cannabis resin. This drug was carefully concealed in a vehicle, including in the front and rear bumpers, under the seats and on the ceiling.

The perpetrators, a man and a woman of Spanish nationality, were arrested. Despite the sophisticated methods of concealment, the authorities managed to discover the narcotics. The suspects were handed over to the Bab Sebta police for a thorough investigation to determine the origin of the drugs and the network involved.

These operations are part of the ongoing and intensive efforts deployed by the DGSN, with its counterpart the DGST, to combat international trafficking in drugs and psychotropic substances.
