Will Switzerland embark on the creation of specific legislation on artificial intelligence? Or will it be content, as is often the case in digital matters, to apply current laws? For now, the suspense is complete. We should know by the end of this year. Several months ago, the Federal Council commissioned the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications to draw up a report. Available a priori at the end of 2024, this study could be the prelude to specific regulations discussed from 2025.

Before this highly anticipated report, civil society is mobilizing. On Thursday, the AlgorithmWatch association launched a call for such regulation, highlighting in particular cases of discrimination resulting from the use of algorithms. “Protection against discrimination needs an update. The use of artificial intelligence can indeed discriminate between people on the basis of very diverse characteristics. The Federal Council must make this challenge a priority for future regulations around AI,” said Angela Müller, director of AlgorithmWatch for Switzerland, on Thursday.
