Public services financed by the State and local authorities, local missions (ML) support young people aged 16 to 25 in their professional and social integration process. “They manage completely different realities depending on the territories where they are located,” underlines Florent Michelin, director of the Ivry-Vitry one where around forty people work. In Vitry, young people will, for example, experience difficulties finding accommodation, whereas in other regions of France, they will rather be faced with mobility problems. The digital divide is very present in our territory.

“Young people use their smartphones to have fun, but when they have to go to the Family Allowance Fund (Caf) website, they are lost,” notes Florent Michelin.

In addition to personalized support provided by advisors, ML has set up seven workshops per week to enable them to acquire digital skills and master the platforms where they can open rights. In total, nine types of workshops are given each week by the ML teams: creation of CVs, cover letters, understanding the challenges of an interview, job search strategy, etc.

Some of them are adapted to the needs of young people, such as an exploratory workshop “which allows them to take stock of the tools available to them”, explains Pascal Marchand, head of the Employment department. The agent is also at the initiative of a “soft skills” workshop:

“Today, recruiters no longer base themselves solely on technical skills, but also on personal qualities such as stress management, relating to others, empathy… There is a bit of innateness, a bit of “acquired through experience, but it can also be worked on.”

For Florent Michelin, it’s about “removing the brakes one by one, then putting them in a position of responsibility”. And it’s by doing that you learn. “We went with young people to the North, they had to organize the trip themselves,” he says. “There were some hiccups, but it’s not serious! Afterwards, we debrief!”

In total, 4,407 young people were supported by the local mission in 2023.
