NBA Draft: Raptors choose Ja’Kobe Walter, who distinguished himself with Baylor

NBA DRAFT RESULTS

Baylor University’s Ja’Kobe Walter was the Toronto Raptors’ pick 19th overall in Wednesday’s NBA draft.

The Raptors will have the first pick when the second round begins on Thursday.

Walter played just one season with the Bears, leading the team with 14.5 points on average.

A Dallas native, he set a Baylor record for points by a freshman in his first game with 28, against Auburn.

He was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Year.

“I’m just trying to make an impact in any way I can,” Walter said during a video conference call Wednesday night. “Whatever they need me to do when I’m with them, I’m going to do it. I’m going to try to bring the intensity that helps us win.”

He hopes to integrate smoothly into a group including Scottie Barnes, Immanuel Quickley and Ontario’s RJ Barrett.

“I saw them all in action,” said Walter, who had not practiced with the Raptors. Scottie has a lot of personality, he brings a lot of energy. RJ is a really good scorer and Quickley is great as a playmaker. I think I’ll fit in well. I’m really excited, I can’t wait. »

Last year, the Raptors drafted Gradey Dick 13th overall.

In 2021, the Toronto club selected Scottie Barnes fourth overall.

On Wednesday evening, Canadian Zach Edey, originally from Toronto, was drafted ninth overall by the Memphis Grizzlies.
